Empat hari sebelum berlangsungnya pilihanraya umum ke-12, Suruhanjaya Pilihanraya (SPR) membuat kejutan besar. Pengerusi SPR, Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman membuat pengumuman bahawa SPR membatalkan penggunaan dakwat kekal dalam pilihanraya umum 8 Mac ini. Sidang media SPR itu turut dihadiri Peguam Negara, Abdul Gani Patail dan Ketua Polis Negara, Musa Hassan.
